Email Security

  • Configure your anti-virus program to scan for attachments and viruses, and even then be wary of opening attachments from strangers.
  • Use Junk Mail Filters - Cruzio's and your email program's built in filters.
  • Use Mozilla Thunderbird - it has better options than Outlook Express.

  Web Browser Security
Updating your browser is probably the single best thing you can do to improve your surfing experience and help make your computer more secure. Cruzio recommends that you maintain the most recent non-beta browser version on your computer.
  • Use Firefox - it's more secure than Internet Explorer
  • When using credit cards online, make sure that the site URL starts with https, and check that the padlock icon shows up on the browser.
  • Download the latest version of your Web browser: http://www.cruzio.com/support/security/

  Robust Passwords

  • Strong passwords are important – make it a combination of letters and numbers, and a mixture of lower and uppercase is recommended.

  Operating System Updates

  • Windows -> Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Windows Update
  • Macintosh -> Apple Menu -> Software Update
  • Both can be set to automatically check for updates - this is highly recommended

  Antivirus Software
Viruses are strings of code or programs alter the performance of your computer. Be sure to install antivirus software like AVG-Free or Norton Antivirus on your computer, keep it updated and run it weekly at least. The OS re-installation includes installation and configuration of an Anti-Virus program.
  • Online Scanner - http://housecall.antivirus.com - a good second opinion
  • Remember that Antivirus programs can sometimes cause problems with email, so it's always good to have a way to reinstall the program.

  Firewalls
A firewall helps prevent unauthorized access to your computer
by blocking outside access of unused services and notifying you
when suspicious activity is detected. The OS re-installation includes installation and configuration of a firewall program program.
  • Windows XP - Enable from Windows Firewall Control Panel
  • Mac OS X - System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall
  • Zone Alarm - Free version available
  • Hardware - you'll get basic protection using routers from D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, et al
  • Since Firewalls regulate internet access, they can sometimes block important things like email and web browsing. Sometimes they have to be reinstalled to fix the problem.

  Spyware Removal Tools
Spyware is background software surreptitiously installed on your computer, usually by an advertiser who'd like to know more about you and your viewing habits. Install an anti-spyware utility like Spybot, Adaware, or Microsoft Defender. These tools should be kept updated and run at least once a month.
