What is "phishing"?
Spammers create fake graphics, urgent sounding emails and
phony Web pages imitating banks, government offices, and
other trusted institutions -- and their fakes can look quite
realistic. This deceptive practice is called "phishing." Here's
how to protect yourself:
|
- If you reached a site via an email link, don't ever enter
your password or other personal information.
- Don't send secret information via email either.
- If you think a request may be legitimate, email or call
the company directly -- or use a Web address you've seen
in official company literature, such as your bank statement.
- Watch out for warning flags like misspellings or bad
grammar.
- The more urgent the message appears, the more likely
it is to be a scam.

Viruses: They're almost commonplace
these days so there's really no defense other than either becoming
a luddite or buying virus protection software. The Cruzio Junk
Mail Filters have some pretty handy low-level virus protection
scripts within them so it's a good idea to enable them. Read here for
more virus information but please get some anti-virus software
- immediately! Remember to update it regularly or else it'll
be useless.
Hackers/Probes: We've heard
from countless customers expressing shock when their new firewall
software reports the number of times their home computer is "probed" in
the course of a day. Use of firewall software is a personal choice
but it can offer a very solid layer of protection. To make it work
for you, you must diligently learn to use it. Read more about firewall
protection on our DSL
security page.
Identity Theft: Yikes! It's
no longer just fodder for mediocre Hollywood movies. We keep your
personal information completely secure at Cruzio. Please read our privacy
statement for more information. If you have an online store
in which you take personal information, especially credit cards,
you need to learn how to use your secure
Web space at Cruzio to keep that data encrypted. If you're
just an avid online shopper, please use caution when you throw
that plastic around. Always verify that the site from which you're
buying is hosted on a secure
server.
How secure is Cruzio?
Cruzio's servers are kept in two state-of-the-art network operations
centers, safe from fire, flood, power outages, thieves, and of
course, hackers. Our engineers are on-call 24 hours a day, vigilantly
monitoring our network.
