Unsolicited junk email is known as "spam." Many email programs allow you to set up "filters" to block spam from reaching your mailbox. There are many ways to set up spam filters. The following instructions give you an idea of how to delete spam based on criteria you set in your software. Please note that no filtering scheme is perfect; some spam may get through, and you always run the risk of deleting messages that you want to receive. You should test your spam filters by sending email to yourself, and by having email sent to you from other addresses. These instructions assume that Outlook Express has already been installed and configured to check your email. 1) Launch Outlook Express. 2) Under the "Tools" menu, choose "Message Rules", then "Mail." In the window "New Mail Rule", select the condition which activates the filter. If you wish to delete messages based on the sender, check "Where the From line contains people" and go to step 3. If you wish to delete messages containing certain subject matter, check "Where the subject line contains specific words" or "Where the message body contains certain words", and go to step 4. 3) If using "Where the From line contains people", go to section 3 in the "New Mail Rule" window, and click on the highlighted words "contains people". 3a) In the window "Select People", specify the name(s) of the sender from whom you wish to avoid messages. Click on the "Add" button. Click "OK". Go to step 5. 4) If using "Where the subject line contains specific words" or "Where the message body contains certain words", go to section 3 in the "New Mail Rule window, and click on the highlighted words "Contains Specific Words." 4a) In the window "Type Specific Words", enter the subject matter or words you wish to block. Click on the "Add" button, then click "OK." Go to step 5. 5) In the "New Mail Rule" window, in section 2, "Select the actions for your rule", check the box next to "Delete it." 6) Set Outlook Express to empty the deleted messages from the trash bin at the end of a session. 6a) Launch Outlook Express. Under the "Tools" menu, choose "Options". 6b) From the "Options" window, select the "Maintenance" tab. Under "Cleaning Up Messages", check the box next to " Delete Messages From The Deleted Item Folder On Exit". Click "OK" to close the "Options" window.
