Unsolicited junk email is known as "spam." Many email programs allow you to set up "filters" to block spam from reaching your mailbox. There are many ways to set up spam filters. The following instructions give you an idea of how to delete spam based on criteria you set in your software. Please note that no filtering scheme is perfect; some spam may get through, and you always run the risk of deleting messages that you want to receive. You should test your spam filters by sending email to yourself, and by having email sent to you from other addresses. These instructions assume that you have already installed Netscape Communicator 4.72 on your system. 1) Launch Netscape Messenger (if you are running Communicator, under the "Communicator" menu, choose "Messenger"). Under the "Edit" menu, choose "Message Filters". 2) In "Message Filters" window, click on the "New" button. 3) In the "Filter Rules" window, enter the name by which you wish to refer to this filter in the "Filter Name" field". Next select "Match Any of The Following". If you wish to set parameters for filtering messages using the "Subject" line of the message header, go to step 4a. If you wish to set parameters for filtering by sender, go to 4b. If you wish to filter messages according to text in the body of the message, go to step 4c. 4a) Use the drop-down menus to make the first half of the sentence say "the 'subject' of the message 'contains' …" and then enter the subject line of the messages you wish to delete from your mailbox. 4b) Use the drop-down menus to make the sentence say "the 'sender' of the message 'contains' …" and then enter the email address of the sender of the messages you wish to filter from your mailbox. 4c) Use the drop-down menus to make the sentence say "the 'body' of the message 'contains' …" and then enter words you wish to avoid receiving in email. By using the "more" button, you may specify additional parameters for the filter, or expand the parameters so that several subjects, senders, or words contained in the body of the message will cause a message to be filtered from your email. 5) Using the drop-down menu, choose "delete", so that the second half of this sentence says "… then 'delete'". 6) In the "description" field, you may place a brief description of the filter you've just configured, such as " removes email from spam@spam.com". 7) Click OK to close the "Filter Rules" window. Click "OK" to close the "Message Filters" window. Cruzio provides these instructions as a service to our users.
