Unsolicited junk email is known as "spam." Many email programs allow you to set up "filters" to block spam from reaching your mailbox. There are many ways to set up spam filters. The following instructions give you an idea of how to delete spam based on criteria you set in your software. Please note that no filtering scheme is perfect; some spam may get through, and you always run the risk of deleting messages that you want to receive. You should test your spam filters by sending email to yourself, and by having email sent to you from other addresses. This document assumes that you have already installed and configured Netscape 4.6, and that you wish to delete unwanted messages completely. 1.1) Launch Netscape. Under the "Edit" menu, choose "Message Filters". 1.2) In the "Message Filters" window, select the "New" button. 1.3) Ignore the "order" column. In the "Name" field, enter a name for the filter, such as "Spam". 1.4) Under "Description" you may enter a brief description for the filter, such as "eliminates spam email." Setting the Filter Action 2.1) After the phrase "If an incoming message" select "Matches any of the following". If you wish to filter email according to words in the subject of the message, go to step 2.2a. If you wish to filter according to the person or address sending the message, go to step 2.2b. If you wish to filter according to a word or words in the main body of the message, go to step 2.2c. 2.2a) If you wish to filter messages according to words in the subject line, use the drop-down menus to choose "Subject" and "Contains", then enter the words you wish to filter in blank field. 2.2b) If you wish to filter messages according to the person or email address sending the message, use the drop-down menus to choose "Sender" and "Contains", then enter the address or name in the blank field. Note: make sure that if you enter a name, it has appeared in the "Sender" field of the message header. 2.2c) If you wish to filter messages according to words contained in the body of the message, use the drop-down menus to choose "Body" and "Contains", and enter the words. You can use the button at the bottom of this window, "More", to add additional lines defining words you wish to avoid. Each line should have "Body" and "Contains" selected, and then the word should be entered in the blank field. This will not remove the words from the message, but will remove the entire message containing those words. 2.3) In the next section, following the word "Then" use the drop-down menu to select "Delete".
