How to Set Up Your Windows 98 Computer to Dial Up to Cruzio

These instructions assume that you are running Microsoft Windows 98, and that Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are already installed on your system (These come pre-installed with Windows 98).If you choose to use a non-Microsoft Web browser such as Netscape Communicator (which also handles email), you can skip steps 7-11. Please follow these instructions from start to finish, step-by-step.

Step 1 -- Verify That Dial-Up Networking, Dial-Up Adapter, TCP/IP Protocol, and Client for Microsoft Networks Are Installed

1.1) Have your Cruzio Login Information sheet sheet ready to use. (You may also need your original Windows 98 installation diskettes or CD-ROM.)

1.2) Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings," and then choose "Control Panel."

1.3) Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon, select the "Windows Setup" tab, then double-click on "Communications."

1.4) Make sure that "Dial-Up Networking" is checked. If it is, go to step 1.5. If it is not, check the box next to "Dial-Up Networking" and click on "OK." Make sure that "Communications" has a check in the box next to it, and then click "OK" again. You will need to insert your Windows 98 installation disks or CD-ROM so that Windows 98 can install the appropriate drivers. After "Dial-up Networking" is installed, go to step 1.5.

Note: If "Dial-Up Networking" had already been installed but you had since changed some settings, or if you have had problems getting the settings to work properly, you should remove and then re-install "Dial-Up Networking." To remove it, uncheck its box. A window then appears asking if you want to remove "Dial-Up Networking." Click on the "Yes" button to confirm the deletion. Then go to the beginning of step 1.4 to add it again.

1.5) Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings," then choose "Control Panel." Double-click on the "Network" icon. Select the "Configuration" tab. If "Dial-Up Adapter", "TCP/IP" and "Client for Microsoft Networks" are listed, go to step 2.1.

If "Dial-Up Adapter" is not listed, click on the "Add..." button, double-click on "Adapter," then scroll through the list until you can select "Microsoft." Select "Dial-Up Adapter" and click on "OK." Windows 98 will now install the appropriate files from your original Windows 98 installation CD-ROM or diskettes.

If "TCP/IP" is not listed, click on the "Add..." button, double-click on "Protocol," then select "Microsoft." Select "TCP/IP" and click on "OK." Windows 98 will now install the appropriate files from your original Windows 98 installation CD-ROM or diskettes.

If "Client for Microsoft Networks" is not listed, click on the "Add..." button, double click on "Client," then select "Microsoft." Select "Client for Microsoft Networks" and click on "OK." Windows 98 will now install the appropriate files from you original Windows 98 installation CD-ROM or diskettes.

Note: If "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" had already been installed but you had since changed some settings, or if you have had problems getting the settings to work properly, you should remove and then re-install "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP." To remove these, select "Dial-Up Adapter" by clicking on it once (not twice), and then click on the "Remove" button (this removes both "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP"). Click on the "OK" button to confirm the deletion. Then go to the beginning of step 1.5 to add them again.

1.6) Now in your Network dialog box select "Dial-Up Adapter," click on "Properties," and select the "Bindings" tab. Make sure the "TCP/IP" box is checked.

Click "OK" to close this window, and then click "OK" again. If Windows 98 asks you to restart, restart.

(If, after restarting, Windows 98 asks you to enter a Username and Password, enter your "Network Login" (not your "E-mail Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet (the letter "x" in your Network Login is lowercase, and there should be no space between the x and the numbers. Press the "tab" key to jump to the password box, and then press the "Enter" key. Windows 98 will ask you to confirm you password. Press "Enter" again to confirm, and Windows should come up).

Step 2 -- Set the TCP/IP Properties

2.1) Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click on the "Control Panel" folder, then double-click on the "Network" icon.

2.2) Double-click on the "TCP/IP" listing to open the "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box. If you see more than one "TCP/IP" listing, double-click on the "TCP/IP -- Dial-up Adapter" listing. (You may get a dialogue box warning you that "You have asked to change TCP/IP properties...". Click "OK".)

2.3) Select the "IP Address" tab (if it is not already selected). Select the "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" button.

2.4) Select the "DNS Configuration" tab. Select the "Disable DNS" button.

2.5) Select the "WINS Configuration" tab. Select the "Disable WINS Resolution" button.

2.6) Select the "Bindings" tab. Make sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" button is checked. ( If "Client for Microsoft Networks" does not appear, you probably need to install it. See Step 1.5.)

2.8) Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box to close this box and bring up the "Network" window. Now click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the "Network" window. A box will appear asking if you if you wish to restart. Click on the "Yes" button.

Step 3 -- Set Up a Connection Icon

3.1) Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click on the "Dial-up Networking" icon. (If a "Welcome to Dial-up Networking" window appears, click on "Cancel.") Double-click on the "Make New Connection" icon. Name the new icon "Cruzio".

Your modem should appear in the "Select a modem" box. (You probably configured it when you installed Windows 98, if your modem was connected to your computer at the time.) Click on the "Configure..." button.

3.2) With the "General" tab selected, make sure the "Port" setting indicates the com port that your modem is connected to (if you aren't sure of which port, don't change this setting). For the "Maximum speed" setting, select "115200" for a 56k X2, v.90 or v.92 modem; "57600" for a 33.6 or a 28.8 modem; select "19200" for a 14.4 modem.

Do not check the "Only connect at this speed" checkbox.

Do not change the settings under the "Connection" or "Option" tabs. Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window.

3.3) Click on the "Next" button of the "Make a new connection" window. Leave the "Area code:" box blank (unless you are dialing long distance into Cruzio, in which case you should enter "831"). In the "Telephone number" box, enter the phone number from your Cruzio Login Information sheet.

If , and only if, you have call waiting, you should enter "*70," before the phone number to disable call waiting while you are on the Internet.

3.4) Click on the "Next>" button, and then click on the "Finish" button to create your new connection icon.

Step 4 -- Set the Properties of Your New Connection Icon

4.1) Select (single-click, do not double-click, on) the "Cruzio" icon that you just created. Under the "File" menu, select "Properties." then click on the "Server Type..." button.

4.2) In the "Type of Dial-Up Server" section, click on the down arrow to reveal the pop-up menu. Select "PPP: Internet; Windows NT Server; Windows 98".

4.4) Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button. Make sure that the radio buttons next to "Server assigned IP address" and "Server assigned name server addresses" are selected.

Put a check in both the "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" boxes, if they are not already checked.

Click "OK" to close the "TCP/IP Settings" window.

Click "OK" to close the "Server Types" window, then, if necessary, click "OK" to close the "Cruzio" window.

4.5) In the "Dial-Up Networking" window, select the "Connections" menu and then select "Settings...".

4.6) Put a check in the "Prompt for information before dialing" checkbox.

4.7) Put a check in the "Redial" checkbox. Enter "5" times in the "Before giving up retry" box. Click on the "OK" button.

Step 5 -- Connect to Cruzio

5.1) Double click on the new "Cruzio" icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder. This brings up the "Connect To" window.

5.2) In the "User name" box, enter your "Dialup Login" (not your "Email Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (All letters in the Dialup Login are lowercase, and Dialup Logins cannot contain spaces.)

5.3) In the "Password" box, enter your "Dialup Password" (not your "Email Password") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note that Cruzio passwords are case sensitive and contain no spaces or dots; enter your password, using capitals and small letters, exactly as it appears on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.) Type your password very carefully, as you will not see it on the screen.

5.4) Put a check in the "Save password" checkbox.

5.5) Click on the "Connect" button. This tells your computer to dial into Cruzio and automatically log you in. Wait for a message telling you that you are connected. Click "Close" to shut this message window.

5.6) You should now disconnect from Cruzio by clicking on the "Cruzio" icon in the "Dial-up Networking" folder and then clicking on the "Disconnect" button that appears in the "Connected to Cruzio" window.

Step 6 -- Create a Shortcut to the Connection Icon

6.1) Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click on the "Dial-up Networking" icon. (If a "Welcome to Dial-up Networking" window appears, click on "Cancel.")

6.2) Select (single-click, don't double-click on) the new "Cruzio" icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.

6.3) Under the "File" menu, choose "Create Shortcut".

6.4) A dialog box will appear, asking you if you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop. Click "Yes" and a "Shortcut to Cruzio" icon will appear on your desktop.

How to Log In and Out

Your newly created "Shortcut to Cruzio" icon is what you use to establish your connection to Cruzio. Double-click on it to dial up Cruzio and log you in to the system. After you successfully connect to Cruzio, you must run various "client" software, depending on what area of the Internet you wish to visit. For example, if you wish to browse the World Wide Web, you can run a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

When you are finished with your session, you should exit your client software, and then disconnect from Cruzio. You disconnect from Cruzio by clicking on the "Disconnect" button that appears in the "Connected to Cruzio" window, which you can access by double-clicking on the "Cruzio" icon in the "Dial-up Networking " folder.

Step 7 -- Set the Internet Explorer Start Page and Make Outlook Express Your Default E-mail Program.

If you don't want to type in your password each time you check your mail, put a check in the "Remember password" checkbox.

Click "Next>"

8.7) Click "Finish" to save your settings.

Step 9 -- Set Up Outlook Express Mail Without Using the Setup Wizard

You can either setup Outlook Express by using the Internet Connection Wizard (step 8) or by manually changing settings (step 9). If you have already configured Outlook Express for your Cruzio account using the Wizard, skip step 9 and go to step 10.

9.1) From the "Tools" menu, choose "Accounts". An "Internet Accounts" box should appear. Select the "Mail" tab across the top of that window by clicking on it.

9.2) There should be an account listed in this window. If there is no account listed, click on the "Add" button, and then select "Mail" from the list that appears. This will start the "Internet Connection Wizard". Re-do Step 8 above, starting on Step 8.3).

If you are currently connected to Cruzio, this will check to see if you have any new messages on the mail server, and if so, will download the messages to your computer. (If you are not currently connected to Cruzio, you will first be prompted to log in.)

10.4) In the upper right section of the "Outlook Express" window, you will see a list of your incoming messages. To read the contents of a message, click on it and the text of the message will appear in the lower right section of the window.

10.5) To send a message, click the "New Mail" button in the upper-left section of the window.
