These instructions assume that you are running Microsoft Windows 95. Windows 95 includes its own PPP dialer (winsock.dll file), so you cannot use any other dialer, such as the Netmanage Chameleon dialer or Trumpet winsock, with Windows 95. You can, however, use non-Microsoft client applications such as Netscape or Eudora. Please follow these instructions from start to finish, step-by-step. Step 1 -- Verify That Dial-Up Networking, Dial-Up Adapter, and
TCP/IP 1.1) Have your Cruzio Login Information sheet sheet ready to use. (You may also need your original Windows 95 installation diskettes or CD-ROM.) 1.2) Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings," and then choose "Control Panel." 1.3) Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon, select the "Windows Setup" tab, then double-click on "Communications." 1.4) Make sure that "Dial-Up Networking" is checked. If it is, go to step 1.5. If it is not, select "Dial-Up Networking" and click on "OK." You will need to insert your Windows 95 installation disks or CD-ROM so that Windows 95 can install the appropriate drivers. After "Dial-up Networking" is installed, go to step 1.5. Note: If "Dial-Up Networking" had already been installed but you had since changed some settings, or if you have had problems getting the settings to work properly, you should remove and then re-install "Dial-Up Networking." To remove it, uncheck its box. A window then appears asking if you want to remove "Dial-Up Networking." Click on the "Yes" button to confirm the deletion. Then go to the beginning of step 1.4 to add it again. 1.5) Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings," then choose "Control Panel." Double-click on the "Network" icon. Select the "Configuration" tab. If both "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed, go to step 2.1. If "Dial-Up Adapter" is not listed, click on the "Add..." button, double-click on "Adapter," then scroll through the list until you can select "Microsoft." Select "Dial-Up Adapter" and click on "OK." Windows 95 will now install the appropriate files from your original Windows 95 installation CD-ROM or diskettes. If "TCP/IP" is not listed, click on the "Add..." button, double-click on "Protocol," then select "Microsoft." Select "TCP/IP" and click on "OK." Windows 95 will now install the appropriate files from your original Windows 95 installation CD-ROM or diskettes. Note: If "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" had already been installed but you had since changed some settings, or if you have had problems getting the settings to work properly, you should remove and then re-install "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP." To remove these, select "Dial-Up Adapter" by clicking on it once (not twice), and then click on the "Remove" button (this removes both "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP"). Click on the "OK" button to confirm the deletion. Then go to the beginning of step 1.5 to add them again. 1.6) Now in your Network dialog box select "Dial-Up Adapter," click on "Properties," and select the "Bindings" tab. Make sure the "TCP/IP" box is checked. Click "OK" to close this window, and then click "OK" again. If Windows 95 asks you to restart, restart. Step 2 -- Set the TCP/IP Properties 2.1) Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click on the "Control Panel" folder, then double-click on the "Network" icon. 2.2) Double-click on the "TCP/IP" listing to open the "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box. If you see more than one "TCP/IP" listing, double-click on the "TCP/IP -- Dial-up Adapter" listing. 2.3) Select the "IP Address" tab (if it is not already selected). Select the "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" button. 2.4) Select the "DNS Configuration" tab. Select the "Disable DNS" button. 2.5) Select the "WINS Configuration" tab. Select the "Disable WINS Resolution" button. 2.6) Select the "Bindings" tab. Make sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" button is checked. ( If "Client for Microsoft Networks" does not appear, ignore this step.) 2.8) Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box to close this box and bring up the "Network" window. Now click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the "Network" window. A box will appear asking if you if you wish to restart. Click on the "Yes" button. Step 3 -- Set Up a Connection Icon 3.1) Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click on the "Dial-up Networking" icon. (If a "Welcome to Dial-up Networking" window appears, click on "Cancel.") Double-click on the "Make New Connection" icon. Name the new icon "Cruzio". Your modem should appear in the "Select a modem" box. (You probably configured it when you installed Windows 95, if your modem was connected to your computer at the time.) Click on the "Configure..." button. 3.2) With the "General" tab selected, make sure the "Port" setting indicates the com port that your modem is connected to (usually com 2). For the "Maximum speed" setting, select "115200" for a 56k X2 modem; "57600" for a 33.6 or a 28.8 modem; select "19200" for a 14.4 modem. Do not check the "Only connect at this speed" checkbox. Do not change the settings under the "Connection" or "Option" tabs. Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window. 3.3) Click on the "Next" button of the "Make a new connection" window. In the "Area code:" box, enter "831". In the "Telephone number" box, enter the phone number from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. If , and only if, you have call waiting, you should enter "*70," before the phone number to disable call waiting while you are on the Internet. 3.4) Click on the "Next>" button, and then click on the "Finish" button to create your new connection icon. Step 4 -- Set the Properties of Your New Connection Icon 4.1) Select (single-click, do not double-click, on) the "Cruzio" icon that you just created. Under the "File" menu, select "Properties." then click on the "Server Type..." button. 4.2) In the "Type of Dial-Up Server" section, click on the down arrow to reveal the pop-up menu. Select "PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5 (or 4), Internet". 4.3) Make sure there are no "Advanced options" checked. In the "Allowed network protocols:" section, make sure that "TCP/IP" is checked. (If your computer is not on a network, you should uncheck "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible".) Click "OK" to close the "Server Types" window, then, if necessary, click "OK" to close the "Cruzio" window. 4.4) In the "Dial-Up Networking" window, select the "Connections" menu and then select "Settings...". 4.5) Put a check in the "Redial" checkbox. Enter "5" times in the "Before giving up retry" box. Click on the "OK" button. Step 5 -- Connect to Cruzio 5.1) Double click on the new "Cruzio" icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder. This brings up the "Connect To" window. 5.2) In the "User name" box, enter your "Dialup Login" (not your "Email Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (All letters in the Dialup Login are lowercase, and Dialup Logins cannot contain spaces.) 5.3) In the "Password" box, enter your "Dialup Password" (not your "Email Password") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note that Cruzio passwords are case sensitive and contain no spaces or dots; enter your password, using capitals and small letters, exactly as it appears on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.) Type your password very carefully, as you will not see it on the screen. 5.4) Put a check in the "Save password" checkbox. Note: Sometimes the "Save password" checkbox is unavailable (grayed out). This means that you will have to type in your password every time you wish to connect to Cruzio. This is a bug in Windows 95. For more information on this bug in Microsoft's software (and ways to work around the problem), go to "http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q137/3/61.asp" with your web browser. 5.5) Click on the "Connect" button. This tells your computer to dial into Cruzio and automatically log you in. Wait for a message telling you that you are connected. 5.6) You should now disconnect from Cruzio by clicking on the "Disconnect" button that appears in the "Connected to Cruzio" window. Step 6 -- Create a Shortcut to the Connection Icon 6.1) Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click on the "Dial-up Networking" icon. (If a "Welcome to Dial-up Networking" window appears, click on "Cancel.") 6.2) Select (single-click, don't double-click on) the new "Cruzio" icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder. 6.3) Under the "File" menu, choose "Create Shortcut". 6.4) A dialog box will appear, asking you if you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop. Click "Yes" and a "Shortcut to Cruzio" icon will appear on your desktop How to Log In and Out Your newly created "Shortcut to Cruzio" icon is what you use to establish your connection to Cruzio. Double-click on it to dial up Cruzio and log you in to the system. After you successfully connect to Cruzio, you must run various "client" software, depending on what area of the Internet you wish to visit. For example, if you wish to browse the World Wide Web, you can run a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. When you are finished with your session, you should exit your client software, and then disconnect from Cruzio. You disconnect from Cruzio by clicking on the "Disconnect" button that appears in the "Connected to Cruzio" window Step 7 -- Set the Internet Explorer 3.0 Start Page 7.1) If you are not already connected to Cruzio, log in. 7.2) Click on the "Start" button, choose "Programs", then choose "Accessories", then choose "Internet tools", then choose "Internet Explorer". Note: If you do not see Internet Explorer here, click on the "Start" button, choose "Programs", then choose "Internet Explorer". If you do not see Explorer here either, then you may not have it on your system. If you don't have Explorer, see if Netscape Navigator is on your system and ask for our Netscape setup directions. If you don't have any web browser, call our office at 459-6301 and we will help you obtain a web browser. 7.3) Confirm that you are using version 3 of Internet Explorer. Under the "Help" menu, choose "About Internet Explorer". If the version number is not 3.x, these instructions may not correspond to your version. Call our office at 459-6301 and we will help you obtain instructions that will work. 7.4) Under the "View" menu, choose "Options...". 7.5) Select the "Navigation" tab. Make sure the"Page:" box says "Start Page". In the "Address:" box, enter " http://www.cruzio.com" (this tells Explorer to connect to Cruzio's home page each time you launch Explorer). Click "OK" to save changes. Step 8 -- Set Up Internet Mail Note: If you plan to use an email program other than Internet Mail (such as Netscape Navigator or Eudora), then you can skip steps 8, 9, and 10. Also, if you have Internet Explorer v2.0 or earlier, or v4.4, then you probably won't have Internet Mail. 8.1) If you are not already connected to Cruzio, log in. 8.2) If Internet Explorer is not already running, launch Internet Explorer. (To do this, click on the "Start" button, choose "Programs", then choose "Accessories", then choose "Internet tools", then choose "Internet Explorer".) 8.3) Under the "Go" menu, choose "Read Mail". 8.4) If you have not configured Internet Mail before, a dialog box will appear, telling you that Internet mail needs some information. If you see this dialog box, click "Next>" and go to step 8.5. (Note: If you use an Internet Service Provider other than Cruzio for your Internet access, you need to use their SMTP setting instead.) In the "Incoming Mail (POP3) Server:" box, enter your "Incoming (POP) Mail Server" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. In the "POP3 Account:" box, enter your "Email Login" (not your Dialup Login) from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (For example, if your email address is "mary@cruzio.com", your email login is "mary".) In the "Password:" box, enter your "Email Password" (not your Dialup Password) from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note that Cruzio passwords are case sensitive and contain no spaces or dots; enter your password, using capitals and small letters, exactly as it appears on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.)
