These instructions assume you have the Internet Explorer disks available from Cruzio and that you are running Windows version 3.1x on a 386 or better with at least 8 megabytes of RAM (memory). Please follow these instructions from start to finish, step-by-step. If you are installing this software on a 386, or having troubles running it on a 486, please make sure to turn off Java in Internet Explorer as discussed in step 6.2. PLEASE NOTE: Because machines running Windows 3.1 often have older components, Cruzio cannot guarantee that the Internet Explorer Dialer will work with all modems or hardware configurations. Modems known to have trouble using the IE Dialer include Zoltrix, Cardinal Winmodem, Linelink, Prometheus, Phoebe, Zyxel, and RPI-based modems. If you have a well known, name-brand modem (US Robotics, Hayes, etc) you should be able to use this dialer. Step 1 -- Install the Internet Explorer Software and Set Up Modem 1.1) Have your Cruzio PPP/SLIP Login Information sheet, and the 4 disks from Cruzio labeled Microsoft Internet Explorer Setup, ready to use. If you are running any applications, exit them. If you are not running Windows, start Windows. 1.2) Insert Disk 1 into your floppy drive. Choose "Run..." from the Windows (Program Manager) "File" menu. 1.3) A dialog box appears. Enter "A:\SETUP" (or "B:\SETUP" if the floppy disk is in the B: drive). Click "OK". 1.4) A license agreement box appears. Click "I Accept". 1.5) A "Welcome" dialog box appears. Click "OK". 1.6) A "Choose Default Directory" window appears. Click "OK" to accept the default directory of "C:/IEXPLORE". If you get a message that "An existing version of WINSOCK.DLL has been found on your system", then do the following: Click "OK", then wait for the setup screen to appear. When it appears, click "Exit Setup", and then "Exit Setup" again to confirm. Then click "OK" to return to windows program manager, and refer to the Addendum of this document (Checking for Duplicate winsock.dll files in Windows 3.1x). After following the instructions in the Addendum, start again with Step 1 on this document. 1.7) The next dialog box to appear offers you installation options. Click the computer icon to the left of "Complete" to install the Explorer Dialer, TCP/IP stack, Internet Mail, and the Explorer web browser. 1.8) The next dialog box asks you to choose a program group. Click "Continue" to choose the default of "Microsoft Internet Explorer". 1.9) Internet Explorer will now begin the installation process, and will prompt you to insert disks. Insert the appropriate disks and click "OK" after each disk is inserted. 1.10) Now the "Install New Modem" window appears. (Make sure your modem is turned on and properly connected to your computer.) Click "Next>". 1.11) Internet Explorer will now attempt to identify your modem. If it does this correctly, click "Next>" and go to step 1.14. If Explorer does not find any modem on your computer, ensure that it is turned on and connected to the computer, then click "Back" and re-do step 1.10. If Explorer doesn't find the modem after you've checked your connections and re-run step 1.10, you may need to consult your modem manufacturer before continuing. If you have a 56k modem Explorer may default to "Standard Modem". This should work OK. If Explorer finds a modem other than what you have, click "Back", then re-do step 1.10, selecting the "Don't detect my modem..." option, then proceed to step 1.12. 1.12) A window will appear with a list of modem manufacturers. Find the manufacturer of your modem in the list on the left, and then select the model from the list on the right. If your modem does not appear in the list, scroll to the top of the "Manufacturer:" window, select "Standard Modem Types" and select your modem's speed in the "Modems:" window. Click "Next>" and proceed to step 1.13 1.13) Explorer will now prompt you to choose the com port that your modem is on (usually com 2). Choose it, then click "Next>" and proceed to step 1.14. 1.14) Click "Finish", choose "OK", remove floppy disk from drive, and choose "Yes" to restart your computer. (It is very important for the computer to restart at this point, because the setup you just did changes the configuration file (autoexec.bat) that loads when you first start your computer. If the computer doesn't restart, exit windows, turn the machine off and back on, and enter windows again). Step 2 -- Dialup Setup 2.1) After Windows restarts, you will see a new program group's window called "Microsoft Internet Explorer." Double-click on the "Get on the Internet" icon. 2.2) The "Get Connected" dialog box appears. Click "Next>". 2.3) A Setup options dialog box appears. Select the "Manual" radio button, and then click "Next>" 2.4) You are now asked to type the name of your Internet Service Provider. Type "Cruzio". Click "Next>". 2.5) The next box asks you to enter the phone number you use to connect to your Internet Service Provider. Enter the phone number from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. Deselect the check box that says "Use Country and Area/City Code". Click "Next>". 2.6) The next box asks you for your username and password. In the "User Name" box, enter your "Dialup Login" (not your "Email Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (All letters in the Dialup Login are lowercase, and Dialup Logins cannot contain spaces.) In the "Password" box, enter your "Dialup Password" (not your "Email Password") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note that Cruzio passwords are case sensitive and contain no spaces or dots; enter your password, using capitals and small letters, exactly as it appears on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.) Click "Next>". 2.7) In the "IP address" box, select "My Internet Service provider automatically assigns me one". Click "Next>". 2.8) A "DNS Server Address" box appears. Enter "63.249.64.9" in the "DNS Server" box, and "63.249.64.8" in the "Alternate DNS Server" box. Click "Next>" 2.9) A window now appears asking if you want to set up Internet Mail. Click "Yes" and proceed to step 3. Step 3 -- Internet Mail Setup 3.1) A box appears asking for your Mail Username and Password. In the "User Name" box, enter your "Email Login" (not your "Dialup Login", not your "Email Address") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (For example, if your email address is "mary@cruzio.com", your email login is "mary".) In the "Password" box, enter your "Email Password" (not your Dialup Password) from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note that Cruzio passwords are case sensitive and contain no spaces or dots; enter your password, using capitals and small letters, exactly as it appears on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.) In the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" box, enter the "Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note: If you use an Internet Service Provider other than Cruzio for your Internet access, you need to use their SMTP setting instead.) Click "Next>". 3.3) A box appears asking if you want to set up Internet News. Choose "No" and click "Next>". (Note: Cruzio recommends using a news client other than Internet News, as it does not have support for the large number of newsgroups that Cruzio carries). 3.4) Click "Finish". A box appears asking you to "Choose a Program Manager Group". Select "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and click "OK" Step 4 -- Set Options in Your Cruzio Dialer 4.1) Double-click on the Cruzio icon in the Microsoft Internet Explorer window to bring up the dialer. 4.2) Click the "Properties" button on the bottom of the dialer window to bring up the Connection Properties box. Click on the "Modem" tab across the top. In the "Maximum Speed" box, choose "57600" if you have a 56k, 33.6, or 28.8 modem; choose "38400" if you have a 14.4 modem.
