How to Set Up Macintosh System 7.6 to Dial Up to Cruzio

These instructions assume that you are running System 7.6. Although the Apple Internet Connection Kit (AICK) is usually bundled with System 7.6 (on a separate CD-ROM), these directions assume you are not using the Apple Internet Dialer portion of the AICK. (Cruzio has separate setup directions for the AICK.) Please follow these instructions from start to finish, step-by-step.

Step 1 -- Make Sure You Have the Necessary Control Panels

1.1) Have your Cruzio Login Information sheet ready to use. You may also need your System 7.6 installation CD-ROM or diskettes.

1.2) Make sure you have the TCP/IP control panel. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, choose "Control Panels," and then see if you have a control panel called "TCP/IP". If you do not see the "TCP/IP" control panel, you will need to run the System 7.6 installer.)

1.3) Make sure you have the PPP control panel and the Modem control panel. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, choose "Control Panels," and then see if you have a control panel called "PPP" and a control panel called "Modem".) If you have both of these, go to step 2.

If you do not have the "PPP" or "Modem" control panels on your system, you will need to install OT/PPP. To do this, run the System 7.6 installer, click "Install New Software", click "Customize", check the "Open Transport PPP" checkbox, and click "Start". After the installer finishes, restart; then go to step 1.3 again.

Step 2 -- Delete Files That May Conflict

If you have any of the following files, delete them. (If you wish to save them, copy them to a floppy disk and then delete them.) Drag these files to the trash, restart your Mac, and then empty the trash before going to step 3.

In the Control Panels folder (within System Folder):

  • ConfigPPP
  • FreePPP Setup (this file is an alias)
  • MacTCP DNR (note: do not disturb the file called MacTCP)
  • ~FreePPP Menu

In the Extensions folder (within System Folder):

  • FreePPP
  • FreePPP Config Plugin
  • Internet Config
  • Internet Config Extension
  • PPP
  • AOLLink (See our handout on AOLLink)

In the Preferences folder (within System Folder):

  • FreePPP Menu Prefs (stores ~FreePPP Menu preferences)
  • FreePPP Preferences (stores FreePPP Preferences)
  • Internet Dialer folder (stores Apple Internet Connection Kit preferences)
  • Internet Preferences (stores Internet Config preferences)
  • MacTCP Prep (stores MacTCP preferences)
  • PPP Preferences (stores ConfigPPP preferences)
  • TCP/IP Preferences (stores TCP/IP preferences)
  • In the System Folder:
  • MacTCP DNR

In the Internet Connection Kit Folder (on the hard disk):

  • Apple Internet Dialer

Step 3 -- Set Up the PPP Control Panel

Note: If you had to delete any of the files listed in step 2, do not start step 3 unless you have already restarted your Mac and then emptied the trash.

3.1) Open the PPP control panel. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, select "Control Panels," and then select "PPP.")

3.2) Make sure the "registered User" radio button is selected.

3.3) In the "Name" box, enter your "Dialup Login" (not your "Email Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (All letters in the Dialup Login are lowercase, and Network Logins cannot contain spaces.)

3.4) In the "Password" box, enter your "Dialup Password" (not your "Email Password") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Your Dialup Password is case sensitive.)

3.5) Put a check in the "Save Password" checkbox.

3.6) In the "Number" box, enter the phone number from your Cruzio Login Information sheet.

If , and only if, you have call waiting, you should enter "*70," before the phone number to disable call waiting while you are on the Internet.

3.7) Close the PPP window (click on the close box in the left end of the window's title bar). A dialog box will appear, asking you if you want to save changes. Click "Save".

Step 4 -- Set Up the TCP/IP Control Panel

4.1) Open the TCP/IP control panel. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, choose "Control Panels," and then choose "TCP/IP.")

If you have never opened TCP/IP before, you may see this message: "TCP/IP is currently inactive. Changes won't take effect until TCP/IP is made active again. Make TCP/IP active when closing the control panel?" Click "Yes".

4.2) In the "Connect via" box, choose "PPP".

4.3) In the "Configure" box, choose "Using PPP Server".

4.4) In the "Name Server Address" box, enter "63.249.93.131". Hit the "Return" key and, on the second line, enter "63.249.95.6".

4.5) In the "Search Domains" box, enter "cruzio.com".

4.6) Close the TCP/IP window (click on the close box in the left end of the window's title bar). A dialog box will appear, asking you if you want to save changes. Click "Save".

Step 5 -- Set Up the Modem Control Panel

5.1) Open the Modem control panel. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, choose "Control Panels," and then choose "Modem".)

5.2) In the "Connect via" box, choose "Modem Port" if your modem is connected to your Mac's modem port, or choose "Printer Port" if your modem is connected to your Mac's printer port.

5.3) In the "Modem" box, choose your modem from the pop-up menu that appears when you click on the modem selection.

5.4) Close the Modem window (click on the close box in the left end of the window's title bar). A dialog box will appear, asking you if you want to save changes. Click "Save".

How to Log In and Out

The PPP control panel is what you use to establish your connection to Cruzio. If you wish to test your setup, open PPP, and click on the "Connect" button to try to connect to Cruzio. This dials up Cruzio and logs you in to the system. Once your connection is established, you must run various "client" software to perform specific tasks. Run an email client such as Eudora to send and read mail; a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer to browse the World Wide Web; an FTP client such as Fetch to download files, etc. To finish your on-line session, quit your clients and then click on the "Disconnect" button. This will log you out and hang up your phone line.

If you wish to make an alias of PPP as a shortcut to log in, see step 6.

Step 6 -- Create an Alias for the PPP Control Panel

As a shortcut, you may wish to create an alias for the PPP control panel and place it on your desktop. This way you can dial in to Cruzio by clicking on an icon on your desktop, rather than going into the Control Panels folder.

6.1) Double-click on the hard disk, then look for the System Folder.

6.2) Double-click on the System Folder, then look for the Control Panels folder.

6.3) Double-click on the Control Panels folder, then look for "PPP".

6.4) Single-click (don't double-click) on "PPP" to select the icon. Under the "File" menu, choose "Make Alias".

6.5) Now the Mac will create a file called "PPP alias". Drag this alias to the desktop. You can log in to Cruzio by double-clicking on this alias.
