How to Set Up Macintosh OS 7.5 to Dial Up to Cruzio
These instructions assume that you are running System 7.5.3 or 7.5.5, and that you have the disk containing FreePPP 1.0.5 from Cruzio. If you are running System 7.5, 7.5.1, or 7.5.2, you should upgrade to 7.5.3 before following these instructions (the ugrade is free; ask us about obtaining the upgrade). Please follow these instructions from start to finish, step-by-step.

Step 1 -- Delete Files That May Conflict and Are No Longer Needed

To cleanly install Internet PPP dial-up connection software, you should first look for any of the following files/folders, and delete them if present. Drag these files to the trash, restart your Mac, and then empty the trash.

In the Control Panels folder (within System Folder):

  • ConfigPPP
  • FreePPP Setup (this file is an alias)
  • MacTCP DNR (do not disturb the file called MacTCP)
  • ~FreePPP Menu

In the Extensions folder (within System Folder):

  • FreePPP
  • FreePPP Config Plugin
  • Internet Config
  • Internet Config Extension
  • PPP (this is the PPP extension, not the PPP control panel)
  • AOLLink (see our handout on AOLLink)

In the Preferences folder (within System Folder):

  • FreePPP Menu Prefs (stores ~FreePPP Menu preferences)
  • FreePPP Preferences (stores FreePPP Preferences)
  • Internet Dialer folder (stores Apple Internet Connection Kit preferences)
  • Internet Preferences (stores Internet Config preferences)
  • MacTCP Prep (stores MacTCP preferences)
  • PPP Preferences (stores ConfigPPP preferences)
  • TCP/IP Preferences (stores TCP/IP preferences)

In the System Folder:

  • MacTCP DNR (do not disturb the file called MacTCP)
  • In the Internet Connection Kit Folder (on the hard disk):
  • Apple Internet Dialer

Step 2 -- Make Sure You Have the Networking Software Installed

2.1) Have your Cruzio Login Information sheet, and the disk containing FreePPP 1.0.5, ready to use. You may also need your System 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 installation CD-ROM or diskettes.

2.2) Make sure you have either Open Transport or "classic networking" installed. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, select "Control Panels," and then see if you have a control panel called "TCP/IP" or "MacTCP".)

If you have the "TCP/IP" control panel, you are using Open Transport; go to step 3.

If you have the "MacTCP" control panel, you are using classic networking; go to step 3.

If you do not see "TCP/IP" or "MacTCP" in your control panels, you will need to install some networking software. To do this, run the System 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 installer, switch from the default of "Easy Install" to "Custom Install", and select the "Networking" software checkbox. After the installer finishes, click on the "Restart" button to reboot; then start at step 2.2 again.

Step 3 -- Install the Dialer Software

3.1) Insert the disk containing the FreePPP package into your Mac. Double-click on the "FreePPP" folder to open it. Install "Config PPP" into the Control Panels folder. (To do this drag the "Config PPP" icon from the floppy disk into the Control Panels folder that is inside the System Folder on your hard disk.)

3.2) Install "PPP" into the Extensions folder. (To do this drag the "PPP" icon from the floppy disk into the Extensions Panels folder that is inside the System Folder on your hard disk.)

It is not necessary to copy anything else from the Free PPP folder onto your Mac's hard disk.

3.3) If you do not know the correct modem initialization string for your modem, double-click on the file called "Modem Strings from TISK" that is in the "FreePPP" folder. Look for your modem in this list and write down the appropriate modem initialization string in the blank space at step 5.7. (If you need help to determine the proper modem init string, call Cruzio at 459-6301.)

3.4) Restart your Mac.

Step 4a -- Set Up TCP/IP (v. 1.1)

Depending on what networking software you have, you will either need to set up the TCP/IP control panel or the MacTCP control panel. If you have TCP/IP, follow step 4a, not 4b. If you have MacTCP, follow step 4b, not 4a.

4a.1) Open the TCP/IP control panel. (To do this, click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen, select Control Panels, then select "TCP/IP".)

4a.2) In the "Connect via" box, choose "FreePPP" or "MacPPP".

4a.3) In the "Configure" box, choose "Using PPP Server".

4a.4) In the "Name Server Address" box, enter "63.249.93.131". Hit the "Return" key and, on the second line, enter "63.249.95.6".

4a.5) In the "Search Domains:" box, enter "cruzio.com".

4a.6) Click on the little "close box" (in the upper left corner of the TCP/IP window) to close the window and save your settings. A dialog box will appear, asking you if you want to save changes. Click on the "Save" button.

Step 4b -- Set Up MacTCP (v. 2.0.6)

Depending on what networking software you have, you will either need to set up the TCP/IP control panel or the MacTCP control panel. If you have TCP/IP, follow step 4a, not 4b. If you have MacTCP, follow step 4b, not 4a.

4b.1) Open the MacTCP control panel. (To do this, click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen, select Control Panels, then select "MacTCP".)

4b.2) Click on the "More..." button. This brings up another window.

4b.3) Set the "Gateway Address" (in the lower left corner) to "63.249.93.129".

(Ignore the "Class," "Subnet Mask," "Net," "Subnet," and "Node" settings.)

4b.4) In the upper left corner, set the "Obtain Address" button to "Server."

4b.5) Now look at the "Domain Name Server Information" section in the lower right corner of the window. Note that the tab key, not the return key, is used to move the cursor from box to box in steps 4b.6 through 4b.11.

4b.6) Enter "cruzio.com" in the "Domain" box.

4b.7) Hit the tab key to go to the "IP Address" box and enter "63.249.93.131".

4b.8) Hit the tab key again to go to the second "Domain" box under the first one. Enter a period in this box.

4b.9) Tab to the second "IP Address" box and enter "63.249.95.6".

4b.10) Tab to go to the third "Domain" box and enter "cruzio.com" again.

4b.11) Tab to go to the third "IP Address" box and enter "63.249.95.7".

4b.12) Select the top "Default" button.

4b.13) Click on the "OK" button to bring up the previous window.

4b.14) You are now finished configuring MacTCP. Make sure the PPP icon is still selected. Click on the little "close box" (in the upper left corner of the MacTCP window) to close the window and save your settings.

Step 5 -- Set Up ConfigPPP (part of FreePPP v. 1.0.5)

5.1) Open the Config PPP control panel. (To do this, go to the Apple menu, select "Control Panels," and then select "ConfigPPP.")

5.2) Make sure the "Port Name" is indeed set to whatever your modem is connected to (usually the modem port). Leave the "Idle Timeout" and "Echo Interval" settings as is.

5.3) Now you need to set up a new "PPP Server" configuration based on your modem type. Click on the "New" button to bring up a new window. Enter "Cruzio" in the "PPP server name:" box. Click on "OK." Then click on the "Config..." button to bring up a new window.

5.4 Set the "Port Speed" to "57600" for 56k, 33.6, or 28.8 modems, "19200" for 14.4 modems, or "9600" for 9600 modems.

5.5) Set the "Flow Control" to "CTS & RTS (DTR)" (This setting will probably work, but if you do not have a modem cable capable of hardware handshaking, you will need to change this setting.)

5.6) Set the "Phone num" to the phone number on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.

If, and only if, you have call waiting, you should enter "*70," before the phone number to disable call waiting while you are on the Internet.

5.7) Now you must set the modem initialization string; this is a very important setting. Enter your modem initialization string in the "Modem Init" box. The correct string depends on the manufacturer, model, and speed of your modem.

If you cannot find the correct string for your modem, the best thing to do is to call your modem's manufacturer. As a last resort, try "ATZ" (if this doesn't work, try "AT&F1" or "AT&F0" or leave it blank). If you do not enter the correct modem initialization string, you may not be able to connect properly at all or you may experience intermittent problems.

Here are strings for some common modems:

Global Village Teleport Gold AT&F1
Global Village Teleport Gold II AT&F1&K3
Global Village Teleport Mercury AT&F1&K3
Global Village Teleport Platinum AT&F1W1S95=44
Supra 14.4 LC AT&F1
SupraFAXModem v.32bis AT&F1
SupraFAXModem 28.8 AT&F1 or AT&F1&K4%C0
US Robotics Sportster 14.4 AT&F1&H1&C1&D0X4
US Robotics Sportster 28.8 AT&F1
US Robotics Sportster v.34 AT&F&A3&B1&H1&R2&D0&C14S7=90

For future reference, write your modem information here:

Modem manufacturer and model:
Modem initialization string:

5.8) Click on the "Authentication..." button to bring up a new window.

5.9) In the "Auth. ID" box, enter your "Dialup Login" (not your "Email Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (The letter "x" in your Dialup Login is lowercase, and there should be no space between the x and numbers.)

5.10) In the "Password" box, enter your "Dialup Password" (not your "Email Password") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Your Dialup Password is case sensitive.) You will not be able to see what you type, so type very carefully.

5.11) Click on the "OK" button to bring up the previous window.

5.12) Click on the "Connect Script" button to bring up another window. It is not necessary to use a script to connect to Cruzio, so make sure all the "Out" buttons are selected to disable any scripts lurking in these boxes.

5.13) Click on the "OK" button to bring up the previous window.

5.14) Click on the "Done" button. You are finished setting up Config PPP.

5.15) Click on the little "close box" in the upper left corner of the ConfigPPP window to close the window and save your settings.

5.16) Restart your Mac.

How to Log In and Out

The ConfigPPP control panel is what you use to establish your connection to Cruzio. If you wish to test your setup, open ConfigPPP, and click on the "Open" button to try to connect to Cruzio. You have successfully connected when you see the words "PPP DOWN" change to "PPP UP" (in the upper left corner of the "Config PPP" window). Clicking on the "Open" button dials up Cruzio and logs you in to the system. Once your connection is established, you must run various "client" software to perform specific tasks. Run an email client such as Eudora to send and read mail; a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer to browse the World Wide Web; an FTP client such as Fetch to download files, etc. To finish your on-line session, quit your clients and then click on ConfigPPP's "Close" button. This will log you out and hang up your phone line.

Important note: It is sometimes possible to establish your connection by simply launching client software (such as Netscape) that automatically connects to Cruzio and logs you in. (What is actually happening is that Netscape itself invokes ConfigPPP which then dials Cruzio and logs you in.) We recommend that you instead use ConfigPPP directly to establish your connection, leave the ConfigPPP window open on the desktop, and then use Netscape. This way, when you have finished your session and quit Netscape, the ConfigPPP window will still be on your desktop, reminding you that you still need to hang up the phone line by clicking on the "Close" button of ConfigPPP.

If you wish to make an alias of ConfigPPP as a shortcut to log in, see step 6.

Step 6 -- Create an Alias for the ConfigPPP Control Panel

As a shortcut, you may wish to create an alias for the ConfigPPP control panel and place it on your desktop. This way you can dial in to Cruzio by clicking on an icon on your desktop, rather than going into the Control Panels folder.

6.1) Double-click on the hard disk, then look for the System Folder.

6.2) Double-click on the System Folder, then look for the Control Panels folder.

6.3) Double-click on the Control Panels folder, then look for "ConfigPPP".

6.4) Single-click (don't double-click) on "ConfigPPP" to select the icon. Under the "File" menu, choose "Make Alias".

6.5) Now the Mac will create a file called "ConfigPPP alias". Drag this alias to the desktop. You can log in to Cruzio by double-clicking on this alias.

 A NOTE ABOUT SHAREWARE
Some of the Internet applications that you will use (including many of those that you download from the net) are "shareware." This means that even though this software is distributed for free, the authors of these applications ask you to pay them fees if you use their products. Please read the text files that came with your software for more information.
