Cruzio Setup Docs » How to Set Up the D-Link DI-624 Router for Cruzio DSL

» Introduction
» Getting Started
» General Security Measures
» Wireless Security Measures
» Default Settings

For most Cruzio customers, if you have already set up your computers for DSL, the D-Link wireless router works right out of the box*. However, the D-Link has no security protection by default. In technical terms, it broadcasts the SSID, does not encrypt data, and has no administrative password set. It's like having a house with a welcome sign by the street and the front door key hanging from the lock. Unless you follow the steps below to secure your network, anyone in the neighborhood with a wireless-capable computer can "walk" right in. And once someone has access to your network, they can use it for whatever purpose they choose—legal or illegal.

In short, it's extremely important that you take these security steps, not just for your own sake, but also for the rest of the online community.

The following instructions guide you through some basic steps to set up and secure your network. While we hope this document is helpful, Cruzio does not officially provide support for wireless networks. For detailed information about all the features and functions of your D-Link router, please consult the User's Guide, available at http://support.dlink.com/. You can also contact D-Link technical support 24/7 at (877) 453-5465, or visit their Web site at: http://support.dlink.com/contact/ , and from that page select "DI" and "624".

*Customers using a static IP address may need to modify their settings.

**The D-Link DI-624 router is very similar to the D-Link DI-524 router, but is configured slightly differently. If you have the DI-524, please follow the instructions for model DI-524. If you are not sure which model you have, look at the bottom surface of the router. The model number is printed on the label.

GETTING STARTED

How to Physically Connect the D-Link

1. Plug an Ethernet cable into the DSL modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the "WAN" port on the D-Link.
2. Using an Ethernet cable, plug any wired computers into any of the 4 Ethernet ports on the D-Link.

How to Access the D-Link Configuration Screen
The D-Link is configured using a Web browser. After you have connected your computer to the D-Link router, follow these steps:

1. Launch your Web browser. Enter "http://192.168.0.1" into the address bar and press the "Enter" or "Return" key.
2. A logon pop-up screen will appear. Type "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank.
3. Click "OK". A D-Link configuration screen will appear. All changes to the D-Link configuration are made here.

GENERAL SECURITY MEASURES

Change the Admin password
Leaving the password blank is not a good idea. It should be changed to something more secure. To change the password, go to the D-Link configuration screen and:

1. Click the "Tools" tab.
2. Click the "Admin" button.
3. Under the "Administrator" heading, enter the new password, and a second time to confirm.
4. Click "Apply".
5. The next time you access the D-Link configuration screen, you will need to enter the new Admin password.

Disable the Wireless LAN
If wireless access is not necessary, you should disable the wireless part of the D-Link. This will prevent anyone from accessing the network wirelessly. (If you are using the wireless features, please skip down to "Wireless Security Measures".) From the D-Link configuration screen:

1. Click the "Home" tab.
2. Click the "Wireless" button.
3. Click the "Off" button next to "Wireless Radio".
4. Click "Apply".
5. You are done securing your wired network. No further action is required.

WIRELESS SECURITY MEASURES

Enable WEP
Enabling WEP* (Wired Equivalent Privacy) will require anyone wishing to access the Internet through your wireless network to enter a password. After the correct password is entered, a connection is established, and all data sent from the D-Link to the computer and back is encrypted. From the D-Link configuration screen:

1. Click the "Home" tab.
2. Click the "Wireless" button.
3. Choose "WEP" from the dropdown menu for "Security".
4. Click the "Open System" button next to "Authentication".
5. Set the "WEP Encryption" to "128 bit".
6. Set the "Key Type" to "ASCII".
7. Type a 13 digit password into "Key 1".
8. Click "Apply".
9. When you connect to your wireless network from a computer, you will need to enter the 13 digit password.
*Note: If your computer's operating system supports it, enabling WPA-PSK is more secure than WEP. The steps above can be modified to set up WPA-PSK.

Change the SSID
By default, the D-Link is set to advertise the existence of your wireless network to computers. It does this by broadcasting an SSID (Service Set Identifier), also called a "network name" because it identifies your wireless network. Changing the SSID makes it easier for you to distinguish your network from surrounding networks. From the D-Link configuration screen:

1. Click the "Home" tab.
2. Click the "Wireless" button.
3. Change the "SSID" from "default" to an SSID of your choice.
4. Click "Apply".

DEFAULT SETTINGS FOR THE D-LINK DI-624 ROUTER:

Out of the box, the default settings are:

1. DCHP Client, Server, and NAT are on
2. Open Wireless with SSID set to "default"
3. Web interface is located at <http://192.168.0.1>
4. Administrative password is not set
