How to Set Up Outlook Express 4/4.5 to Use Email

These instructions assume you have already installed Internet Explorer 4 and Outlook Express.

Step 1 -- Set Up Outlook Express Mail

1.1) Double-click on the "Outlook Express" icon on your desktop, or find the program on your start menu (often at Start Menu; Programs; Internet Explorer; Outlook Express) and click on it there to open it. The "Outlook Express" window should appear.

1.2) Single-click on the "Read Mail" icon in the main window of Outlook Express. If this is the first time you've opened Outlook Express, an "Internet Connection Wizard" box will appear. If a box does not appear, go directly to step 2.

1.3) In the Internet Connection Wizard box, select the radio button next to "Create a new Internet mail account" and then click "Next>".

1.4) In the "Display Name" box, enter your real name. Click "Next>".

1.5) In the "E-mail Address" box, enter your "Email Address" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (For example, "mary@cruzio.com" or "joe@joesdomain.com".) Click "Next>".

1.6) In the "My incoming mail server is a" box, make sure that "POP3" is selected from the drop-down box.

In the "Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server" box, enter your "Incoming (POP) Mail Server" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet.

In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, enter the "Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note: If you use an Internet Service Provider other than Cruzio for your Internet access, you need to use their SMTP setting instead.)

Click "Next>"

1.7) Select the radio button next to "Log on Using: Pop Account Name".

In the "POP account name" box, enter your "Email Login" (not your "POP Account", not your "Network Login") from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (For example, if your email address is "mary@cruzio.com", your "POP account name" is "mary".)

In the "Password" box, enter your "Email Password" (not your Network Password) from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (Note that Cruzio passwords are case sensitive and contain no spaces or dots; enter your password, using capitals and small letters, exactly as it appears on your Cruzio Login Information sheet.)

Click "Next>"

1.8) In the "Internet mail account name" enter a name for your email account (example: Mary's Cruzio Mail). Click "Next>".

1.9) Select the radio button next to the "Connect using my phone line" option. Click "Next>"

1.10) Choose the radio button next to "Use an existing dial-up connection", and then select "Cruzio" from the list below. Click "Next>".

1.11) Click "Finish" to save your settings.

Step 2 -- Confirm Your Outlook Express Mail Settings

2.1) From the "Tools" menu, choose "Accounts". An "Internet Accounts" box should appear. Select the "Mail" tab across the top of that window by clicking on it.

2.2) There should be an account listed in this window. If there is no account listed, click on the "Add" button, and then select "Mail" from the list that appears. This will start the "Internet Connection Wizard". Re-do Step 1 above, starting on Step 1.4).

If there is an account listed, double-click on it to open the "Properties" window.

2.3) Select the "General" tab. Under the "User Information" section:

In the "Name" box, enter your real name.

In the "E-mail Address" box, enter your "Email Address" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (For example, "mary@cruzio.com" or "joe@joesdomain.com".)

Make sure there is a check in the box next to "Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive".

2.4) Select the "Servers" tab.

Under the "Server information" section:

In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" box, enter "mx.cruzio.com". (Note: If you use an Internet Service Provider other than Cruzio for your Internet access, you need to use their SMTP setting instead.)

In the "Incoming mail (POP3)" box, enter your "Incoming (POP) Mail Server" from your Cruzio Login Information sheet.

Under the "Incoming Mail Server" section:

Select the radio button next to "Log on Using: Account Name".

In the "Account Name" box, enter your "Email Login" (not your "POP Account", not your Network Login) from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. (For example, if your email address is "mary@cruzio.com", your "Account Name" is "mary".)

In the "Password" box, enter your "Email Password" (not your Network Password) from your Cruzio Login Information sheet. 2.6) Click "OK" to save your settings and exit "Properties".

2.7) Click "Close" to return to Outlook Express.

Step 3 -- Use Outlook Express to Send and Receive E-mail

3.1) If you are not already logged into Cruzio, log in.

3.2) Launch Outlook Express. (To do this, either click on the Outlook Express icon on your desktop, or find it on your "Start" menu -- often at Programs; Internet Explorer; Outlook Express).

3.3) To get your new email messages, click the "Read Mail" icon, and then click on the "Send and Receive" button across the top of the window. If you are currently connected to Cruzio, this will check to see if you have any new messages on the mail server, and if so, will download the messages to your computer. (If you are not currently connected to Cruzio, you will first be prompted to log in.)

3.4) In the upper right section of the "Outlook Express" window, you will see a list of your incoming messages. To read the contents of a message, click on it and the text of the message will appear in the lower right section of the window.

3.5) To send a message, click the "Compose Message" button.

3.6) In the "To" box, enter the recipient's email address. (As a test example, enter your own email address to send yourself a message).

In the "Subject" box, enter a title for this message. (Call it "Test email to myself".)

In the lower section of the window, enter the text of the message.

3.7) When you are finished typing your message, click the "Send" button (with the envelope icon) in the upper left corner of the message window. This should send your message and return you to the main Outlook Express window.

3.8) Click the "Send and Receive" button to check for any new incoming messages. (If you sent the message to yourself, you should then see this message appear in your incoming messages.)

Step 4 -- Set the Internet Explorer 4.0 Start Page

4.1) Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings", then choose "Control Panel". Double click on the "Internet" icon to open the Internet Properties dialog box.

4.2) Click on the "General" tab.

Under the "Home Page" section, in the "Address" box, type "http://www.cruzio.com/". Click "OK" to save changes and exit the Internet Properties box. Close the control panel.
