Author Topic: Got Dem Ol' DSL Upgrade Blues (AT&T)  (Read 542 times)
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:03:19 am »

I'm informed by Cruzio that my request to try out 6 MPS cannot be granted due to my phone service. The wires will not support the bandwidth up in the wilds of Felton.

Is it possible to determine if the drag is in the ancient line that serves our cabin or if the SLV area itself simply will not allow higher DSL speeds over existing lines?

If the trouble is very local, we might request AT&T upgrade the Dixie-cup thread  running through the ground without conduit since 1977. Anybody else in Felton racing at the higher DSL speeds?

Thanks.

I ran some tests on your DSL line and it appears that you are within the distance the AT&T sets for some of its faster speeds.  Unfortunately, even though you are within those pre-set distances, the line quality itself can not handle the speed upgrade, as the max bit-rate is too low.  It may be possible to get an AT&T technician out there and perform maintenance on your phone lines in order to be able to provide faster speeds.

However, that is getting out of Cruzio's domain as we do not manage those phone lines.  I would recommend you contact AT&T.

I'll do that right now, and thanks. We have a very disagreeable neighbor who has given us considerable trouble over the years, and one effect is a phone line which runs as a cable without conduit and has not been moved since it was first placed, in 1977.

So we'll have an interesting conversation about upgrading our phone line (I placed conduit as per their instructions in 1991 but the witch scared 'em off and it lies unused to this day) when AT&T does not provide us with DSL.

Watch this space!

Okay, the report from the front:

They just don't do that.

That means if the lines are open and we have voice service, they won't come out to improve it. I say, well, lookahere, I shorely understand your position, but I hear there's competition for this broadband between you and the cable company, and I hear from you I'm at the end of the wire, and here Comcast is offering me a whoollllle lotta broadband.

Don't matter none. They won't climb poles and dig channels for no one customer. I don't blame 'em.

That's the news from Felton. Now, back to you ...

I got the same response from Cruzio.

I live about two blocks from Soquel Drive, near Dominican Hospital, so it isn't necessary to live in the deep forest next to a witch to find yourself without adequate service from ATT.

Looks like Comcast is the only game in town for us. Lucky me, I can stay with my slow DSL and avoid all the anxiety of change!

For our customers who do not have the fastest DSL speeds available in their area or for those who cannot get DSL at all, we will be providing a new, wireless service in the near future. For more information, please visit the following link:
