The Bitter Guidebook Drives to Northern Iceland

The Least Interesting Drive In Iceland

After a few days in Reykjavik -- a lovely, colorful city which hugs a calm, grey bay -- we headed up to the nothern part of Iceland for waterfalls and lava fields. Once again we consulted our bitter guide. We weren't disappointed. Here's how they described the drive from Reykjavik to Akureyri:

"The 230 km-long stretch of the road from Bru to Akureyri is one of its least interesting, and most tourists speed through it as quickly as possible."

Gee.

And of a town we passed through called Blonduos:

"There's little reason to stop here, as the town's main attraction, its astonishingly ugly concrete church, can be seen from the Ringroad anyway. Designed to resemble a volcanic crater, the church sits opposite the tourist office atop a small hill overlooking the town and its charmless grey walls therefore dominate almost any view of Blonduos."

Sorry I didn't get a photo of that one. I didn't notice it at all as we drove through Blonduos. Could it really be that bad?

"But officer, everyone goes this fast - my guidebook says so!"

Looks like you took your time enough to take that gorgeous photo.

There's a picture of the church here:

It certainly is unique.
