Garrison Keillor came to town in summer of 2009, and the sponsoring organization (UCSC) had a contest for an Ode to Santa Cruz.

A map shows the Left Coast, but we know we're Right;
Just show us an issue, we're ready to fight!
So "Nuclear Free" says our town border sign,
In contrast, you're welcome to buy mountain wine.
You'll trim all your bushes as much as you please,
But make sure you don't cut your heritage trees.
We still have our many old Volkswagen busses,
A time warp in spirit is one of our plusses.
The prime local car is a Toyota Prius,
'Cause "Greener Than Thou" is how others should see us.
Renewable energy, roofs full of solar
Means neutral on carbon, stops melting ice, polar.
From veggies to coffee, or beer that is brewed,
The preference is clear for organic grown food.
The surfers catch waves when they're out on the water,
And try keep it clean to help save the sea otter.
With redwoods and palm trees and whales, feng shui,
We love our small world on Monterey Bay!
