Concert Review Campbell Brothers

For a long time it's bothered me that there are so few reviews of local concerts. So many excellent musicians perform here, yet only rarely will you read a review. I go to a lot of shows but when I can't go to one, I wish I could read about what I missed! If anyone feels the same, maybe there could be a Santa Cruz Music Blog with concert reviews. To kick things off, here's a review of Snazzy Productions' show at the Kuumbwa this past Saturday, June 14, of the Campbell Brothers:

The Kuumbwa should have been packed for this show! The Campbell Brothers come out of the Sacred Steel tradition of gospel music. Pedal steel, lap steel, electric guitar, bass, drummer and a powerful vocalist gave a soulful performance that literally had people jumping up and down, celebrating the sheer joy of being alive. The lap steel practically sang the words of Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come." The second set found the Campbell's exploring a jazzier instrumental before introducing special guest and local slide wizard Bob Brozman, whose extended solos fit (more or less) with the Campbells' back-up. Bass player and drummer had their moment to solo as well, and kicked butt! By the end of the evening I know I was touched by the spirit. Thanks to Snazzy Productions for bringing these folks to our town.

Till next time, keep the music in your heart....J Riva
