Animated gifs of local webcams

Chris Published in wonders of naturelocal color by Chris Print

Being a programmer has definite benefits. Perl scripts to download and archive webcam images, and the ultra fabulous gifmerge utility to combine them into animated gifs.

These are animations from the Cruzio LomaCam and BusCam of the last 24 hours, using images taken every 1/2 hour.

There are a couple dozen webcams (that I know of) in the County, there's a handy list here.

We're always looking for new webcams! If you have a broadband connection to the Internet and have a fabulous vista of something, consider getting a webcam and sharing the view!

I have a little $99 webcam pointed out my front window. I got it a couple of years ago after a series of still unsolved burglaries left me with the sick feeling that my property was occupied by criminals from the moment I left for work to the minute I got home. The configuration of the camera was maddening, because it requires networking knowledge. As I recall something like step two in the instructions was contact your system administrator. I did finally get the thing running all by myself. I spent a couple of hours every night for a week searching online for clues. So Chris, I would challenge you to write webcam set up instructions for the normal person, as well as sell a suitable beginning webcam. Because it is a lot of fun once it's working. What do you say?

Ouch.
I was thinking I should do just that, but the best way to install a webcam if you are not yourself a nerd or geek is to use the "buddy system", which is to call your nerd or geek buddy and ask them to help.

One problem is there are so many different kinds and no single set of instructions would cover all cases.

I myself have come to prefer the Axis webcams, info at http://www.axis.com/products/v.../index.htm

They're pricey, but they are also standalone devices which do not require a computer, they have their own ethernet jack. As a computer programmer, I also like to write programs to grab the images and "cook" them for the web.

One of these days, I want to have a full Pan/Tilt/Zoom webcam like
the one maintained by the Santa Cruz Flying Club here: http://scfccam.viewnetcam.com/...Language=0
