Quilling - what the heck is it? Consider it the Medieval version of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle... Medieval book illuminators, after completing and binding books, would end up with hand-made pages of varying sizes, and slice off edges to make them more even. Not being wasteful sorts, they would twirl the strips around their quill pens (hence, the term "quilling"),

Bikers, Booze and Bands Tips on how to book a show at Henflings Roadhouse Tavern Part of the Good Times Making Noise blog. My goal is to provide helpful information to local bands on how to book shows and build their audience. The term "roadhouse" is said to date back to the mid-1800s. One history of the term originates from the gold rush. As travelers

All over California, city leaders, local governments, and special interest groups are gathering to decry the proposed “Gas Tax Redistribution”. According to the Sentinel, 109 cities have already pledged to support a lawsuit against the state, a lawsuit that is tentatively set to be filed once the budget is signed. The Great Gas Tax Theft, as I like to call

Here's a video of Mary McCaslin and Steve Palazzo from their show last night at Don Quixote's last night, doing a duet of 'Your Lone Journey'. (Steve is my guitar teacher, and I just got back from my lesson, during which we played this song for a while. It is a really really nice song to play and sing) [video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK_5sFDcc7U

One of the joys of being the Cruzio Webmaster (tm) is that I peruse the web logs and see who's hittin' the site, and sometimes, how they got here. Without fail, on the local monthly search reports, there are dozens of searches for the phrase "Neil Young". Okaaayyyyyyyyyyyy. But today, let there be a valid response. NPR, for a limited time, is hosting the

The waves were a little bit better out at Steamer's yesterday, which looks like the last fine day of the year as we comfortably slip off into winter.
Thanks to my Bucci polarizing glass lens sunglasses, the day had a psychedelic tone to it. The colors and the clarity of the afternoon light, and the sun gleaming through the waves were very special. Snorf

Couple of folks have asked the stories behind my tattoos. I started getting inked at 18, average one a year, and now have 27 totaling about 60 hours of work from nine different artists. Not my first, but if I only had one tattoo - it would be this one, Double Happiness. Tattooed in red above my heart, it is a symbol of hope and wholeness. I do not

Yes, woe is me walking between my house on the Santa Cruz westside and, well, everywhere. Here is a scene from the recent Santa Cruz Coldwater Classic taken from the surfer dude statue vista point on West Cliff Drive at Pelton. The various other times I passed this way in the last few days, the waves weren't as large as they were this afternoon during a

I'm very happy to report that the Cafe Campesino kiosk on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz has been allowed to stay! There had been some doubt, but the cafe's customers signed a petition in droves. I suspect that helped the city decide in favor of Dina Torres, the owner. Hooray! ¡Ándale! Go and get your nourishing, affordable and absolutely scrumptious

Being a programmer has definite benefits. Perl scripts to download and archive webcam images, and the ultra fabulous gifmerge utility to combine them into animated gifs. These are animations from the Cruzio LomaCam and BusCam of the last 24 hours, using images taken every 1/2 hour. There are a couple dozen webcams (that I know of) in the County, there's a

Some pictures from the Memory Walk in Seascape. We ended up over shooting and walking an extra mile up the beach. I've never been down there either in Seascape the village or the beach.
We saw a couple of fishermen casting into the surf.
And we saw a lot of surfers just a few yards off the beach in the really shallow water where these cool little

We were a colorful group that morning, the five of us. Chris, with her cat glasses and multiple facial piercings; Elijah (aka Lije), looking like the long red haired six foot elf that he is; my new friends - Katie & Rennick, family members of the Smiling Iguana Cafe; and me, you know me... a tattooed, spiky haired dyke who apparently lives under the
