New Window on Cedar Street

Cruzio Reporter Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzioworksCruzio by Cruzio Reporter | Comment (1)

Brand new opening -- will be a window!

The Sentinel building used to be a long, uninterrupted wall of 10" thick concrete down most of a block of Cedar Street. It had an element of Willy Wonka's factory: what's going on inside? You could see the newspaper's presses through the far window, but other than that all was dark.

On Friday, February 11th, Cruzio and Ecology Action got together to celebrate the opening of our newly renovated building at 877 Cedar Street.

Cruzio will be holding another celebration -- open to the public, yes, you are invited -- when we light up the gigabit fiber we've brought into downtown Santa Cruz.  The date isn't set yet, but we expect it in late

Finishing the Renovation

Cruzio Reporter Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzio by Cruzio Reporter | Comment (0)

Cruzio is in the final stretch of our renovation project and the building is looking fine. It's on the corner of Cedar and Church Street in downtown Santa Cruz, and we have already started moving in.

The coworking space has huge North-facing windows over it — a beautiful, well-lit space. Many windows are openable, providing pleasant fresh air on nice days.

Walls have been framed, sheetrocked and taped. Kind of beautiful to look at the unfinished bones of Cruzio's new office space.

Cruzio's offices overlook the well-lit coworking space below. The colocation & data center are also on the first floor, protected by a waterproof membrane in the ceiling. Many steps to producing a space which serves every

Our very own Congressman, Sam Farr, paid Cruzio Internet and building partner Ecology Action a visit last week to tour our new building. Cruzio's founder and CEO, Peggy Dolgenos, showed Representative Farr around. He learned about our plans to pull fiber Internet into the building, examined the bones of our forthcoming state-of-the-art colocation center,

Our designer Krissie Olson chose red stairs for our new office space.

It's not going to be a typical bland office space...

We've got walls

Cruzio Reporter Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzio by Cruzio Reporter | Comment (0)

Now Cruzio's new building is more than a skeleton. We've got rooms becoming actual rooms, with sheetrock, tape and plaster. It's exciting to see our floorplan fleshed out and becoming 3-dimensional at last.

We're impatient to move in, but there's still another month of work to go.

In a silvery forest (of building construction)

Cruzio Reporter Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzio by Cruzio Reporter | Comment (0)

When the walls in a steel-and-concrete building are framed, it's silver all around. There aren't any walls to block the light, so one room shines into another and another. Kind of sad that it has to get filled in.

Embrace the Rock

The Editor Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzio by The Editor | Comment (1)

When Cruzio and partners won the right to buy the old, gloomy Sentinel Building at auction, the topic came up almost immediately: what to do with the mid-20th-century crushed-rock facade? Although partially hidden at the time by clawlike cypress bushes, the rock was certainly a standout feature. And not in a good way.

The color? Rusty red. The texture?

Matthew Thompson Amid the Rubble

Cruzio Reporter Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzio by Cruzio Reporter | Comment (0)

The task of designing the Sentinel Building renovation went to Matthew Thompson, one of Santa Cruz's most talented and influential architects.

His approach — preserving the brawny beauty of the mid-century modern building while upgrading its function — won the job for his firm.

Boom! Walls come down at the New Sentinel Building

Cruzio Reporter Published in Sentinel buildingNew SentinelCruzio by Cruzio Reporter | Comment (1)

The demolition is happening fast at the New Sentinel building. That means lots of smashing and crashing. We're opening up windows and doors to let light into the once-dour printing plant. Today Shane called us over to watch some walls fall down — doorways will replace them.

Before and After Shots: New Windows at the New Sentinel

We start with a manufacturing building in downtown Santa Cruz. Our plan: to recycle and re-use the building for a couple of local organizations (Cruzio and Ecology Action). That means making the building people-friendly. Step one: it's dark and gloomy inside. We need more windows and doors!

Let There Be Light! Progress at New Building

We officially broke ground at the Sentinel building in March, but these days the work is really ramping up.

When you pass by Cruzio's future digs  you can hear the hum of equipment and see hard hatted workers milling about. Today the progress was more evident than ever when a new window was cut into the ground floor.
