Santa Cruz has always been known as a beach community, an oasis where Bay Area citizens can escape into the sunny bliss of rolling surf and beautiful redwoods. However, in recent months, Santa Cruz is making waves in another way, following Kansas City, Chattanooga and Lafayette in creating a hyper-connected "Gig City."
But where other cities have relied on

Moscow is celebrating its 864th birthday. Historians assume that the city is actually much older, but the first recorded mention of Moscow dates back to 1147. Despite floods, fires and invasions, the city grew and developed. During the next few years, Moscow will more than double its territory to 251,000 hectares and may soon emerge as a major global

And then one hot morning in June, the Woo arose from their respective dens. They loaded their gear into a 400 dollar gold van and softly slid their new single into the freshly oiled tapedeck. With only the soundsystem to guide them and a long list of stops all over California and Washington, they set out to rock the Western coast. To

Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of the fiber-optic cable cut that left much of Santa Cruz in the dark for more than 24 hours. (Otherwise known as The Great Internet Outage of 2009.) I was caught by surprise by Genevieve Bookwalter's story in the Sentinel Friday that construction of a visitors center for the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary could begin by January. Last time I heard, they needed about $3 million in contributions from the community. Bookwalter's story says the project will be $16 million. Her story says that $13.6 million

I like living in Santa Cruz. I love the atmosphere and the small-town college scene, the decent prices and local flavors. I grew up here, and I'm proud to call SC my home. But let's face it: it seems the only time SC makes the national news is when we're onstage as an example of the worst side of liberalism. Peggy's last post about the rambling woman who

I wish I has a picture for you all, I really do, becuase the image it left in my mind hasn't gone away. A friend and I parked up on the hill somewhere like Miramar or sommat, where we drank our tea and ate our Ferrell's chocolate old fashoineds. It was close to midnight, the city was quiet though her lights still burned underneath a star spangled sky and
