Cafe Campesino kiosk staying in business

I'm very happy to report that the Cafe Campesino kiosk on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz has been allowed to stay! There had been some doubt, but the cafe's customers signed a petition in droves. I suspect that helped the city decide in favor of Dina Torres, the owner.

Anybody up for some gorgeous singing from a Malian pop star? The Rio Theatre website says:

Habib takes some unique approaches to playing the guitar. He tunes his instrument to the pentatonic scale and plays on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni. At other times Habib plays music that sounds closer to the blues or flamenco, two styles he studied

Santa Cruz Street Musicians

One day, after buying a sunflower at the downtown farmers' market, I parked my bike to hang out and listen to the Zimbabwean marimba band. (Add "bouncing dorkily to traditional African rhythms" to the list of stuff white people like!)

 

Normally I'd pass them by, finding the repetitive tunes extremely boring. Yesterday was different.
