Thank You, Kathryn Nance

In a couple of previous posts I complained about my TMJ, and now, I've finally found the treatment to my affliction, or rather, it found me.

I work at an essential oil company which sells to massage therapists, and a couple of my coworkers were at a massage workshop being given by Kathryn Nance, during which she gave a demonstration of massage

Today's Tarot Card: Projections

Today's Tarot Card : Projections

In a cinema hall, you look at the screen, you never look at the back--the projector is at the back. The film is not there really on the screen; it is just a projection of shadow and light. The film exists just at the back, but you never look at that. And the projector is there. Your mind is at the back of the whole

And even more people from Shingu Japan

Howard at a shrine in Shingu City. Howard kept us all laughing. I had to explain to my host family that there's a type of New York humor where you just keep up a barrage of jokes, not always necessarily good jokes. It's all in the delivery.

At the goodbye dinner, Howard started his speech with "Unbelievably for someone from Santa Cruz, I ate sushi for the

More people in Shingu, Japan

Shingu2008 Published in Untagged  by Shingu2008 | Comment (0)

The connection between Shingu and Santa Cruz started with Aikido...

Here is Dan outside the farmer's office in the mountains:

This young woman had really taken the "back to basics" stuff seriously. She was threshing the rice with a foot-pedal gadget. She grew and cooked all her own food and didn't use electricity at all.

People in Shingu Japan

Shingu2008 Published in Untagged  by Shingu2008 | Comment (0)

On our trip, we got to know our sister-city friends from Shingu and we got to know each other.

I've never been so proud of Santa Cruz as when I saw our delegation hiking up mountains, making speeches, making connections… and the folks on the Japanese side were amazing, so generous, such personalities!

Here are some pictures of the people from both cities.

V: The Palinophant

Lynn Araujo from Us Games Systems, Inc recently contacted me to point out that someone has noticed an uncanny resemblance between Sarah Palin and a card from their Vanessa Tarot deck. She writes,

The coincidences are overwhelming- the hair, the glasses, the red suit, the religious fashion accessories all mirror Sarah's look. And of

My Lousy Commute, continued

Yes, woe is me walking between my house on the Santa Cruz westside and, well, everywhere.

Here is a scene from the recent Santa Cruz Coldwater Classic taken from the surfer dude statue vista point on West Cliff Drive at Pelton. The various other times I passed this way in the last few days, the waves weren't as large as they were this afternoon during a

R.I.P. Merl Saunders

Wordsmith Published in Remembrance by Wordsmith | Comment (0)
Legendary new age/jazz/rock keyboardist Merl Saunders died earlier today at the age of 74.  I had the opportunity to see him play at the former Palookaville on New Year's Eve 1995 after I first moved to Santa Cruz, and it was one of my first really good memories of my time here.  The show was excellent, the opener was a San Jose band I had known back

Thoughts on Trust

RamblingRose Published in Quotes by RamblingRose | Comment (0)

We take so much of the universe on trust. You tell me; “In 1950 I lived on the north side of Beacon Street in Somerville.” You tell me; “She and I were lovers, but for months now we have only been good friends.” You tell me: "It is seventy degrees outside and the sun is shining.” Because I love you, because there is not even a question of lying between us,

Where's Scott?

We were in Mr. Suzuki's car when Dave Vincent said it.

"Where's Scott?"

"He's in the other car," someone suggested, and we all went on chatting. There were 9 of us total in the group, plus Suzuki-san and Iwasawa-san, too many to fit in one vehicle. We'd been to an onsen (spa) in the morning. We were on our way to

Shingu: A beautiful land and wonderful people

Shingu2008 Published in Untagged  by Shingu2008 | Comment (1)

Our sister city in Japan is a small city between the coast and beautiful mountains. The parallels to Santa Cruz are many; the differences are few. Our first day we went on a walking tour of the Shinto temples and shrines, having been provided well used umbrellas as we departed city hall. Rain, a little known experience in Santa Cruz is a regular feature of

On Friendship

RamblingRose Published in Quotes by RamblingRose | Comment (0)

And a youth said, "Speak to us of Friendship."

Your friend is your needs answered.

He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.

And he is your board and your fireside.

For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you

Shingu Japan: First and Lasting Impressions

Shingu2008 Published in Untagged  by Shingu2008 | Comment (0)

Dave Vincent, 10-18-2008

This was my first trip to Japan and I did not know what to expect. So when we arrived I just tried to absorb as much as I could. My first impression from the air was that this was indeed a very large island with mostly coastal development. Upon landing it appeared quite industrial with some associated air pollution. As we began
