Casual, Unique, Great Eats,  11/24/08 at 9:20 PM

Always an eclectic choice of entrees, salads, sides, sandwiches, baked goods, deserts - something for everyone. The breads are really top notch, the baked good are super, and super expensive. But, at Gayle's you truly get what you pay for. High quality, and truly different choices, well prepared, flavorful. It's so crazy to review Gayle's because I've never met anyone who doesn't like something made there.

Not many places like Aldo's,  11/24/08 at 8:56 PM

How can anyone not enjoy a breakfast or lunch at this superior location on the water. Having eaten at Aldo's maybe fifty times, I've eaten my way through the menu. Prices are inexpensive, food meets expectations. The service depends: If it is the tourist season, if it's real busy, and if the kids working there at a given moment care about the guests. Mostly they do, and if the service is slow then enjoy the view, the boats, and other diners dogs. Long live this place!

A "good little Italian place",  11/24/08 at 8:39 PM

If somone asks if you know a "good little Italian place," well try Star Bene and you will! First, you're greeted warmly, and tucked into a cozy table. Then you sense you're in good hands because your waiter is authentic, knowledgeable, and professional. The best is yet to come because the menu has so many inviting choices. Virtually everything is well prepared, flavorful, and "old world."
Good wine list, friendly staff.

Heathers can become a habit!,  10/25/08 at 10:51 PM

It's hard not to like Heathers - so many good things to choose and everything is baked and prepared by people who are masters of their craft. If you purchase one item - make sure its a pecan sticky roll. One bite, and you'll be forever a customer.

P.S. A lot of area coffee shops buy their baked goods from Heathers, so the word is out!

Great location, Good food and drinks,  10/25/08 at 10:37 PM

This is a super place to take your "over the hill" friends for casual dining and drinks. Make believe you're in Baja - the ocean is in front of you and the food never disappoints. The folks in the kitchen get it right, order a margarita and you'll see that the bar knows what they're doing too. Nice menu selection of traditional mexican fare. Go once, and I promise, you'll keep going back!

A Santa Cruz Gem,  10/10/08 at 11:01 AM

Do you go to a restaurant once, and it's great, and then a second or third time, and you are disappointed? Avanti never disappoints. Always consistently well prepared food, top notch service, and comfortable atmosphere. We always choose Avanti to mark a special occasion, or enjoy a nice dinner or brunch with friends. solid wine choices, often changing special entrees, and a reliable list of favorites that are always available. As close to Italy as you can get in Santa Cruz.

A Great Place for the Family,  10/10/08 at 12:01 AM

A fun place to take the whole family, from grandparents to the toddlers. A wide selection of Italian-American food, nicely prepared, hot, generous in portions, and darn good pizza. Service is friendly, staff seems to be enjoying their work and having fun. Singing, and enthusiastic celebration by all, adds to the atmosphere, and the kids have fun playing with their own unbaked pizza dough while food is prepared. Salads and pastas and good smells.

Go for the Beer,  10/09/08 at 11:47 PM

A nice variety of well made brews. Too much attitude by waitpersons, and bar tenders. Never feel comfortable or welcome, as the "regulars" and other hangers-on talk loudly with staff, as they make their rounds. Fried foods are greasy, worst calamari in town. Service is slow on weekends. Very ordinary bar food.

Wood Fired, but expensive,  10/09/08 at 11:35 PM

The pie is OK, but never consistent. Minding the wood fired oven requires skill that some staffers haven't developed. With their prices, you expect consistent quality and amounts of toppings. Casual, noisy on weekends, has a neighborhood feel. When busy, the staff gets sort of fussy when you inquire about your order.
