Location: North of Santa Cruz on Highway 1
Description: The park has 34 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian rails winding through coastal terraces and valleys. Several restored buildings once belonging to the Wilder family are preserved. The park has tours and living history demonstrations to help visitors explore the history of early ranchers and farmers along the Central Coast. The site was originally the main rancho supplying Santa Cruz Mission. It later became a successful and innovative dairy ranch. Surrounding grounds include Victorian homes, gardens, and historic adobe.

While I could talk about Wilder's biking and hiking trails, I'll focus these comments on visiting the Ranch as a parent. Wilder is one of our favorite places to bring toddlers. We'll "set up camp" at one of the plentiful picnic tables and then go on to feed the chickens, watch the goats play, chase the resident cats, and peruse the stables. Some weekends they'll have out big bubble wands with vats of "bubble juice", guides give history lessons, or you'll see a blacksmith making horseshoes. Our kids just love running around and are endlessly fascinated with all of the animals. Walk under the bridge and you can circle the horse arena. Be sure to bring a camera, there are good memories to be captured at Wilder.
