My favorite mushroom harvesting spot after the rains. I'm not a mushroom expert so I make sure to have one with me, but I can identify chanterelles, anyway.

I've patted horses and glimpsed bobcats.

Even without the excitement of fungi or big mammals, the Pogonip's a lovely, lovely place to hike. It's a nice balance of woods, meadows, and marvelous views overlooking the ocean.

As in all woodsy areas, if you're allergic to poison oak, like I am, stay on the path and keep your eyes out for the itchy menace.

Like PuffinGal I don't think it's fair to penalize the Pogonip for not having restrooms. Just don't expect any.

Back when I was a Westsider I spent most mornings or afternoons hiking the trails of Pogonip. You can start at the bottom, off Golf Club Drive, and get a good workout heading up the hill towards the old Club House or try the entrance at the top of Spring Street for a flatter beginning. Dogs are allowed on the main trails and there are a variety of lengths depending on how ambitious you're feeling. No matter what trail you take, you won't be disappointed. But don't plan to ride your bike here, they're prohibited. P.S. There aren't any restrooms there.
