I had a bad experience once too, when I was treated contemptuously after inquiring whether they carried any teakettles that cost under $100. An honest "No, we don't" would have sufficed.

However, that's been the exception to the rule. And even though my pockets are not deep, and I sometimes choose to buy cheaper items elsewhere, there are plenty of fairly affordable things for myself and for gifts. And sometimes it makes sense to pay more to get higher quality.

I ended up getting a cheap teakettle at a yard sale, because I don't care about having a beautiful quality teakettle.

On the other hand, I once splurged on a beautiful hand-painted Italian dish at Chefworks. It cost a lot, but it still makes me happy to this day.

If you like to cook with the best tools, you'll have to go to ChefWorks when in Santa Cruz, Ca. It's a lot bigger than the storefront shows but not so big that its boring. A stroll through can take up some time but there are knives and BBQ stuff for the ones that don't like to stroll.

Most important is that most of the stuff you buy is quality and you never need to buy that product again.

If you like to cook, you will love this store. It's just what you want in a cookware shop: beautiful ceramic bowls and shiny copper pans, every odd sort of serving or stirring spoon, lots of whimsical cookie cutters.

It's like Santa's Workshop for chefs. Not cheap but you can usually find less expensive alternatives there, for example they carry Le Creuset but also have plain inexpensive cast iron pans.
