Bookshop Santa Cruz is like a five-star restaurant for the brain, with everything from tasty appetizers to nutritious entrees and decadent desserts.

They do a fantastic job highlighting interesting new books. I always look for the staff picks, as they're sure to be special.

If you ever speak to any of the buyers, you'll find out that they really know their stuff. In my former life as a daycare teacher, I'd ask the children's book buyer about a particular topic, and she'd tell me the best storybooks on the subject.

The magazine selection always tempts me. These days I'd rather buy an occasional issue than subscribe to a magazine, so thank you, Bookshop.

I always check out the used book section, too. It's good stuff, way above the yard sale average in quality.

I don't know if this is still true, but it used to be you'd get a 10% discount for ordering books online. You can have them hold your online order for you to pick up and purchase in person. So convenient.

Last but not least, their stationery section is wayyy too much fun - just as dangerous to my wallet as Paper Vision.

Make sure you get a Reader's Club Card and start earning credit every time you make a purchase.
